I am a self-taught French American analog collage artist whose works focus on themes of history, nostalgia, and longing, as well as their effect on femininity, womanhood, and third wave feminism. Using the medium of collage as the glue that bind these experiences together, I hope not only to explore my own life and those who came before, but to also use the medium as a tool for storytelling, conservation, and contemplation of the major shifts of our lives as individuals, families, and societies.
My professional name, La Compasseresse, is also a combination of these ideas; it comes from the feminization of the first part of my last name, Le Compasseur. The feminized name was originally used by my ancestor Jeanne, who lived in Paris in the 14th century, and went forgotten until I found some of her records. I hope to not only honor her and her ingenuity in a system that would normally have reduced her to just a daughter or wife, but also to reclaim a part of my name for myself, and my female ancestors, from the one I was given, especially with naming and genealogical conventions that disregard women’s identities, value and contributions in their families and society at large.
